Spice & Wolf: Complete Series (Blu-ray/DVD Combo)
Worst Editorial Review I have see for anime on Amazon
I simply could not let the short sighted, narrow minded, and completely incorrect slander that is the editor description shy people away from this great title. To say this show is for "adolescent furries" is an insult to more people than I have time to write about here. The initial description is spot on until you get the part about the downturn Lawrence has in his business once he meets Holo. It is clear the editor only watched 2 episodes and decided he knew everything there was to know which is like a 3 year old telling you he understands how life works.
Spice and Wolf truly begins to take shape when Lawrence starts to further explore his unusual feels toward Holo as he doesn't believe here to be a Wolf Spirit. Through trial and tribulation the pair learn to trust, respect, and eventually care a great deal for one another while doing their best to reach Lawrence's dream while he is still young enough to enjoy it. There "fly by the seat of their pants" approach to business...
An anime that succeeds on multiple fronts
Spice and Wolf has been around for a few years and it has always been one of my favorites. The story does an interesting job or mixing romance, economics, and "medieval" themes. The setting is a very rudimentary world focusing on the travels of a merchant named Lawrence. Originally continuing on a routine travel route, he forms a partnership with Holo, a wolf goddess that has taken human form with a desire to return to her ancient home. It's important to keep the setting in mind when you watch the show or some of the subtleties will be lost on you. This show does not make an attempt to beat you over the head with the finer details, but its considerably more complex than your typical slice of life high school romance.
Subplots within the show include: politics and corruption influenced by religion, monarchical interference in commerce, economics, greed, betrayal, and romance to name a few. If it sounds like the author is putting too much on his plate you might be right...
